Spring has sprung! The snow has melted, the chill in the air has gone into hibernation and the flowers are happy to be in full bloom. Springtime is one of the best times to visit Chicago, or make a tourist out of yourself if you live in the Chicagoland area. There’s always more to explore with new festivals, museums and events opening every month. Check out some of the May events that we are looking most forward to!
It’s May, and every Chicagoan knows what that means…spring and tulips along Michigan Avenue! The blooms are in full swing so whether you’re in the mood for a stroll and shop kind of day or just a bite to eat, take it to Michigan Avenue and check out the beautiful blooms lining the street.
If there’s one thing to remember in May, it’s Mother’s Day. This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 14th. Skip brunch and show your mom you love her by taking her to do something different this year. Magnolia Bakery is offering a cupcake decorating class teaching you and mom how to transform buttercream frosting into beautiful flowers to top six cupcakes (Sat. 5/13, 2 pm). If live flowers are more of mom’s thing, treat her to a stroll through the Spring Flower Show at Lincoln Park Conservatory and Garfield Park Conservatory (9am – 5pm everyday, free).
Quite possibly the most exciting week of the year falls right here – Chicago Craft Beer week. Hundreds of venues throughout the city will be offering special tastings of rare beers and limited time releases as well as special events such as beer crawls, a beer cruise, concerts, and more (Thurs. 5/18 – 5/25).
What more can you ask for than sampling more than 100 wines from all over the world on a perfect Chicago May day? You can have it all at the inaugural Lincoln Park Wine Fest. While sampling, listen to classical music and enjoy tasty bites, even participate in food and wine pairings. Check out tickets here (Sat/Sun. 5/20 – 5/21, 10am – 5pm).
Grab your sweet tooth and roll into McCormick Place to experience the National Confectioners Association’s (NCA) Sweets & Snacks Expo. Perfect for accessing the most candy and snack people and products and gaining a real competitive edge to grow your business. Make sure to pre-register before the event to save your sweet spot (5/23 – 5/25, McCormick Place).
Be sure to catch the Chicago Memorial Day Parade happening on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, beginning with a wreath-laying ceremony in Daley Plaza, then stepping off at noon. The parade marches south along State Street from Lake Street to Van Buren Street. Kicking off for the summer on Saturday night are the summertime fireworks at Navy Pier (Sat. 5/27, 10:15 pm).
